15. The Devil

Chains of desire, self-bound

The Devil is attachment, temptation, and self-imposed bondage. The chains around the captives are loose enough to slip off — a reminder that what binds us is often a cage we've chosen and can leave.

A horned Baphomet reigns beneath an inverted pentagram, and at its feet a naked man and woman wear chains around their necks. Yet the chains are loose enough to slip off at any time. The Devil stands for attachment and bondage, a state chained to matter and desire. It is the card that makes you realize the yoke binding you is in fact one you chose yourself.

Love
In love, the Devil points to intense attraction, passion, or an attachment that may not be entirely healthy. There can be magnetism and desire, but also dependency, jealousy, or a pattern that feels hard to break. Honestly examine whether the bond frees you or binds you. For couples, watch for control or unhealthy dynamics. Passion is powerful, but make sure it isn't a cage.
Career
Professionally, the Devil can indicate feeling trapped, driven by money or status, or bound to a situation you've outgrown. You may be tolerating something unhealthy — a toxic job, overwork, or ambition that's become obsessive. The chains are looser than they feel. Notice what's really keeping you stuck, whether fear, habit, or comfort. Remember you have more freedom to change than you're admitting.
Money
Financially, the Devil warns of materialism, debt, or being controlled by money and possessions. You may be caught in overspending, financial dependency, or chasing more than you need. Short-term temptation can lead to long-term bondage. Look honestly at what's driving your money habits. Freedom comes from seeing the trap clearly and choosing to step out of it.
Relationships
With people, the Devil can show unhealthy dynamics — codependency, control, manipulation, or a bond built on need rather than choice. You may feel tied to someone in a way that drains more than it nourishes. Examine whether a relationship empowers you or entraps you. The power to loosen the chain is in your hands. Choose connection freely rather than out of fear or obligation.
Inner self
Inwardly, the Devil is your shadow — the fears, urges, addictions, or limiting beliefs that hold you captive. You may feel trapped by a habit, a compulsion, or a story you keep telling yourself. But the bondage is largely self-made, and awareness is the first step to freedom. Face what you've been avoiding without shame. Recognizing the chain is how you begin to remove it.
Wellbeing
For wellbeing, the Devil points to unhealthy patterns — addiction, overindulgence, or habits that feel compulsive and hard to break. You may be stuck in something that harms you but feels comforting or automatic. Be honest about the hold it has, without self-judgment. Small steps toward freedom loosen the grip. Remember you can choose to change the pattern, one choice at a time.

Reversed

Love
Reversed, the Devil signals breaking free from an unhealthy attachment or reclaiming your power in a relationship. You may be recognizing a toxic pattern, loosening a dependency, or stepping out of something that bound you. This is a liberating shift toward healthier love. Keep seeing clearly what wasn't serving you. Freedom and self-respect are returning to your relationships.
Career
At work, the reversed Devil suggests breaking free from a situation that trapped you — leaving a toxic job, escaping overwork, or releasing an obsessive drive. You're reclaiming your freedom and perspective. This is a positive step out of bondage, even if it feels uncertain. Keep loosening the chains you've recognized. Choosing what truly serves you opens a healthier path forward.
Money
Financially reversed, the Devil points to breaking a bad financial pattern — paying down debt, curbing overspending, or freeing yourself from money-driven pressure. You're regaining control over materialism or dependency. This is a hopeful turn toward financial freedom. Keep dismantling the habits that kept you trapped. Choosing what you truly need over what tempts you restores your independence.
Relationships
With others, the reversed Devil shows freeing yourself from a controlling or codependent dynamic, or reclaiming your autonomy. You may be setting boundaries, ending a draining bond, or seeing manipulation for what it is. This is empowering growth toward healthier connection. Keep honoring your own needs and freedom. Relationships chosen freely, not out of need, are what you're moving toward.
Inner self
Inside, the reversed Devil reflects breaking free from limiting beliefs, fears, or self-destructive patterns — a genuine liberation. You're gaining awareness of what held you captive and choosing to release it. This inner freedom is hard-won and worth honoring. Keep facing your shadow with honesty and compassion. Each chain you recognize and drop returns your power to you.
Wellbeing
For wellbeing, the reversed Devil signals breaking an unhealthy habit or addiction and reclaiming your wellbeing. You may be overcoming a compulsion, cutting back on something harmful, or freeing yourself from a draining pattern. This is a powerful, positive step toward recovery. Keep taking small choices that loosen the old grip. Freedom from the pattern restores your energy and self-respect.
